A square is approximately 10″x 10″ with a  4.5 mm hook, but you can use any hook you want, as gauge is not important. Hexagonal patches are great, because they give a project a honeycomb texture that works very well with floral rosettes, such as in this case, or with other concentric designs. In fact, hexagons are as close as you can get to circles and still pack the patches edge-to-edge in a larger project.
